Damar Continues to Grow with Appointment of New CEO

At the end of last year our Owner and Board of Directors commenced an intensive search for a replacement CEO to lead Damar into a new and exciting era. Damar is pleased to announce that we have now appointed Christopher (Chris) Bradley as our new CEO.

Chris currently resides in Auckland, New Zealand and the family, with wife Vanessa and 4 children, are eager to make the move to Rotorua to commence his new role.

Chris graduated from Victoria University of Wellington in 1985 with a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration (finance and accounting), and he later went on to study in the UK where he gained his Masters of Business Administration at the Cranfield School of Technology.

Chris brings decades of experience to the business and has a proven track record of taking businesses across a variety of sectors to the next level. Previously, Chris was the General Manager at Coregas, CEO of Supagas, Executive director at Skin Shield Products, Consultant to Easy Factors International and ADL, Managing director at Fullers Ferries and General Manager at ENZA in the UK, Ireland, Scandinavia and the Middle East.

There are extensive opportunities for Damar that lie ahead both domestically and internationally and we couldn’t be happier with Chris joining our Damar family and helping us and our customers achieve continued growth and prosperity.

Reflecting on 2017 – A Milestone Year for Damar

Reflecting on 2017 – A Milestone Year for Damar

For Damar this year saw the conclusion of a 7 year journey, resulting in the business becoming fully compliant as a Dangerous Goods facility. An achievement that was by no means an easy task.

Damar is the first company within the industry to gain such accreditation and that is something we are enormously proud of.

In 2010 after EPA approved our plan and from solid financial backing by shareholders, we were on our way to becoming fully compliant. Over the years the journey has involved a number of timely and very costly steps including; the reconstruction of a new solvent line, major factory upgrades and the installment of new aerosol lines. In June 2016 the Damar site completed work on two DG warehouses, each capable of holding 2,500 pallets each. The last new aerosol line was finalised in August this year bringing the complete upgrade to a conclusion.

The Damar management team have learnt many lessons along the way and are immensely proud of the part each and every Damar employee played in completing this initiative. Being fully compliant opens new and exciting opportunities for Damar, and we look forward to seeing what transpires in 2018 and beyond.

Damar would like to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Christmas holiday!

Ecomist Blue Lake Multisport Festival 2017

Spectacular weather graced the Rotorua Association of Triathletes and Multisport club at the annual Blue Lake Multisport Festival (BLMF), in Rotorua this past weekend.
Some 400 entries over the two day event included local families, friends, athletes and organisations around the North Island.
Event Director & Club President Graham Perks says, “The Blue Lake Multisport Festival is our main fundraiser for the club and it is hugely significant to us to have Ecomist on board as our naming rights sponsor. This is a wonderful part of New Zealand which needs to be celebrated and the support we get from Ecomist and other sponsors ensures we can showcase it in the best possible way by having people swim, bike and run.” Graham says the Blue Lake Multisport event is one of the longest running events in the country, celebrating their 31st year.

The major cash prize and prestige of winning the King and Queen of the Lake was up for grabs for the best overall times across three events – Aquathon, 2km Open Water Swim & the Sprint Triathlon. This grass roots event drew some world class athletes including Olympian Sam Warriner and International Triathlete Bryan Rhodes, to compete for the titles. Sam says, “I love this event and encourage people to enter. There is something for everyone in a beautiful location.”

On Sunday, Sam was crowned Queen of the Lake, Sam says she has competed for 5 years and was so proud to win the overall prize, something she can share with her family and children. Kieran McPherson, an avid triathlete who is competing internationally as well as in NZ, was crowned King of Lake.

1st Sam Bradley-Warriner – Olympian
2nd Natasha Bowyer – won the wetsuit category in the open swim
3rd Hannah Howell – young up and comer from Taupo

1st Kieran McPherson – International Triathlete
2nd Clark Ellice – ex ITU NZ triathlon rep
3rd Andrew Lloyd – 2016 King of the Lake

The 2k Hinemoa Swim trophy competition is a legendary competition across the lake, with the swim tradition dating back before the 1960’s. The BLMF asked the Council if they could use the trophy for the Blue Lake 2K swim without a wetsuit, in 1994 and they been fortunate to continue the across the lake event and awarding athletes with the Hinemoa trophy each year.

BLMF kids triathlon was also a big hit – children as young as 4 competing in the cycle, run and swim competition. And to conclude the weekend a 5K fun run and walk allows everyone a chance to enjoy a trek around the beautiful Blue Lake.

Spot prizes and giveaways were also part of the weekend and Ecomist Starter Packs were up for grabs along with the Ecomist Bug Bullet personal repellent, a handy summer must have by the Lake. Natalie Riddler claims one of the Ecomist Prize packs on Saturday.

Graham says, “We have a wonderful range of events and encourage people to enter and mix it up, we know anyone who does the event once, loves it and is always keen to come back.” The funds raised from the event helps the Rotorua Association of Triathletes and Multisport to grow as a club and target increasing participation in the sport. “This year we have introduced some Triathlon Fundamentals coaching sessions with a paid coach which has enabled us to reach further into our communities and get people active,” he says.

SprayWell Celebrates 21st Birthday

SprayWell Celebrates 21st Birthday

Back in the early 90’s the Forest Industry approached one of Damar Industries’ founding directors, Scott Thomson, with a problem. Workers within the industry who were using spray cans on skid sites, processing yards and in the bush were going home after a days’ work suffering from narcosis. The paints they were using at the time were having an undesirable effect on them, and the industry wanted someone to come up with something to resolve this.  In fine Kiwi fashion, Scott rolled up his sleeves, put his thinking cap on, and in 1992 the brand that many of us have come to know and love, SprayWell was born. Now 21 years later SprayWell is still a market leader in forestry spray paint.  Read More »
