How Damar Is Shaping Safer Roads with ATLM Technology

A Long-Life Approach to Road Safety

For years, ATLMs in ANZ have been installed using thermoplastic systems - a proven and widely used approach that remains a mainstay of road safety programs today.

Damar’s Road Safety division has long supported this effort, supplying both thermoplastic and cold applied plastic (CAP) ATLM solutions across the region. CAP is considered a long-life product and has been used by many manufacturers internationally for some time. While not new to the market, Damar has supplied hundreds of tonnes of CAP material for projects across ANZ, earning a strong track record for reliability and performance.

Unlike thermoplastic, CAP is applied cold and cures within around 30 minutes. It delivers a durable, high-profile tactile surface and has enhanced adhesion properties meaning it will bond well to all road surfaces including concrete, asphalt and chipseal and performs well under Australia’s demanding road conditions - from heat and UV to heavy vehicle wear.

Supporting a National Safety Priority

ATLM rollout has accelerated significantly in recent years as state and federal governments have invested heavily in road safety initiatives, particularly during and after COVID when reducing road trauma became a renewed focus.

Damar is proud to support this national safety initiative, supplying high-quality materials for both CAP and thermoplastic ATLMs to help contractors meet ambitious rollout targets. From multi-lane highways stretching for hundreds of kilometres to regional roads where fatigue-related crashes are disproportionately high, ATLMs are now saving lives across the network.

More Than Just a Line

The visual effect is simple - a line of raised bumps across the tarmac - but behind it lies years of formulation expertise and industry collaboration. Damar has adapted resin systems, curing agents, and installation techniques to deliver high-performing materials that meet the needs of roadmarking professionals.

The scale is impressive: thousands of kilometres of ATLM now in place across Australasia, representing millions of individual tactile nodes. Each one is a micro-barrier against drift, protecting lives at highway speeds.

Driving Forward

With a growing presence in thermoplastic supply in Australia and a long history of CAP supply across ANZ, Damar’s Road Safety team is continuing to refine solutions for every environment and client.

Whether it’s helping keep a truck driver alert on a late-night run or guiding a family car safely through regional roads, Damar is proud to be part of the collective effort to make roads safer - one line at a time.

"ATLMs (rumble-strips) are a hugely effective, cost efficient mechanism for preventing serious crashes, fatalities and injuries across the roading network."
